SOUTH LUANGWA & LOWER ZAMBEZI SAFARI

When we think of true African wilderness photo safari destinations, Zambia should immediately come to mind. If not, this particular safari will show you exactly why! There are two places that are particularly striking – South Luangwa and Lower Zambezi National Parks. Both offer authentic safari camps, incredible game viewing and scenery unlike any other in Africa.

South Luangwa is one of those destinations that some have heard of, and even fewer have actually been to, yet everyone should get to at least once in their lifetime. It’s one of Africa’s last true wilderness destinations that not only offer you as a visitor the opportunity to experience what it’s like to be in the middle of nowhere but also gives you the chance to enjoy incredible safari experiences with some of the most sought after animals on the African continent.

South Luangwa is great throughout the year. This particular safari focuses on the early dry season. There might still be a little greenery from summer left to add some colour to your experience, but it’s a time when water starts drying up and animals developed familiar dry season habits. It’s a lovely time to be on safari as the cooler winter weather ensures predators stay active for longer during the daylight hours, giving you more opportunity to watch and photograph them.

For both South Luangwa and Lower Zambezi, you’ll get to spend quality time with lion, leopards as well African wild dogs.

Lower Zambezi National Park is an absolute gem! It’s very similar in scenery to Mana Pools, just across the river on the Zimbabwe side of the mighty Zambezi. Lower Zambezi separates itself from Mana by having an incredible predator population, especially leopards. It’s incredibly scenic and photogenic – from the towering Albida forests to the open banks and endless vistas of the Zambezi River. There’s so much to see and experience here and it forms a fantastic partner to the South Luangwa safari.

If you love wild & remote experiences, if you love authentic safari camps, if you love parks steeped in history, and if you love incredible wildlife & photographic encounters with lions, leopards, wild dogs, elephants, and more, then this is the perfect safari experience for you.

Come and join us for an unforgettable safari experience in real, authentic Africa!

Itinerary

Arrival day, from Lusaka to South Luangwa

The safari kicks off from Lusaka Airport, Zambia. Please connect with us to arrange any travel/accommodation prior to this point.

The group will meet up at Lusaka and we will all board onto a small scheduled charter flight out to Mfuwe Airport. Mfuwe is a small airport adjacent to the village called Mfuwe. We will be warmly met by our local guide and transferred to Nsefu Camp.

We'll drive from Mfuwe airport to Nsefu Camp, and this drive will take about 2 hours. Half of the drive will be through the colorful village and the second half through the park itself en route to the camp. Once we arrive in the late afternoon, we’’ll check in and head straight out on our first game drive in search of the big cats of South Luangwa and this predator-rich region seldom disappoints.

We do game drives into the night here in the Nsefu Sector of South Luangwa, and this enables us to view wildlife after dark. It will give you a wonderful glimpse into the nocturnal habits of lion, leopard, hyena and more.

DAY 1

Nsefu, South Luangwa

We'll enjoy 3 full days on safari in South Luangwa National Park. Game drive starts early in South Luangwa. We’ll head out 30 minutes before sunrise, at first light. South Luangwa is known for incredible sightings of lions and leopards and our first focus for the mornings will be exactly that – locate the big cats and enjoy quality time with them while they are most active. Once the big cats settle down we’ll spend time closer to water sources such as lagoons and the Luangwa River. This is where animals like elephants, giraffe and buffalo congregate to drink water before the heat of the day sets in. South Luangwa is home to 3 unique sub-species of animals, namely the Cookson’s Wildebeest, the Thornicroft Giraffe and the Crawshay’s Zebra.

We’ll get back to camp by 10 or 11 in the morning, and then will enjoy a delicious breakfast. There’ll be time to relax a little in camp.

By 15:30 we’ll head back out on afternoon game drive. If we found predators in the morning we’ll likely follow up on the last position. This gives us a great opportunity to spend time with them during their most active period, around sunset. We’ll enjoy an evening game drive and return to camp before 20:00. We’ll share fireside conversation after which we will enjoy dinner together.

DAY 2-4

Travel day to Lower Zambezi

We’ll have a light breakfast at the lodge before departing camp with our bags packed. Our morning game drive will end at Mfuwe Airport, where we will board our scheduled charter flight to Jeki Airport in Lower Zambezi National Park. We will transfer to our new home for the next 4 nights - Anabezi Luxury Tented Camp.

Once at camp, we will all settle in and soon after that sit down for lunch. There will be time for a short siesta after, before leaving for our first safari shortly after 3 in the afternoon. Back at camp, we will enjoy a fireside conversation about the day gone by, followed by a lovely dining experience.

DAY 5

Anabezi, Lower Zambezi

Game drive starts early in Lower Zambezi. We’ll head out 30 minutes before sunrise, at first light. Much like South Luangwa, Lower Zambezi is also well known for incredible sightings of lions and leopards and our first focus for the mornings will be exactly that – locate the big cats and enjoy quality time with them while they are most active. Once the big cats settle down we’ll spend time closer to water sources such as lagoons and the Zambezi River. This is where animals like elephants, giraffes and buffalo congregate to drink water before the heat of the day sets in.

We’ll get back to camp by 10 or 11 in the morning, and then will enjoy a delicious breakfast. There’ll be time to relax a little in camp. The camp is right on the banks of the Zambezi River. You’ll do well to enjoy a break with binoculars in hand, waiting for birds and wildlife to come into sight right from the porch of your room or head to the viewing deck with a plunge pool overlooking the Zambezi.

By 15:30 we’ll head back out on afternoon game drive. If we found predators in the morning we’ll likely follow up on the last position. This gives us a great opportunity to spend time with them during their most active period, around sunset. We’ll enjoy an evening game drive and return to camo before 20:00. We’ll share a fireside conversation after which we will enjoy dinner together.

DAY 6-8

Departure Day - back to Lusaka

Today will be our last day in the wilds of Zambia.

We’ll have a better idea of flight time a little closer to the day, but you’ll enjoy some more quality safari time on this final day. The airport is only 45 minutes from our camp, a convenient drive. Our scheduled charter flight from Jeki Airport will take us to Lusaka. Once we are there, the safari experience will draw to a close and you’ll begin your journey home.
