LOWER ZAMBEZI SAFARI

When we think of true African wilderness, the Lower Zambezi should be near the top of every photographer’s list. If it isn’t yet, this safari will show you exactly why! Tucked between the Zambezi Escarpment and one of Africa’s great rivers, it’s a place that feels wonderfully untouched, where the days are shaped by the river and the wildlife still very much sets the rules.

Lower Zambezi National Park is an absolute gem. It sits directly across the river from Mana Pools in Zimbabwe and shares much of that same magic: towering winterthorn forests, golden light filtering through the canopy, open floodplains and elephants wandering the riverbanks against a backdrop of blue escarpment hills. What sets it apart is its predators. The leopard sightings here are exceptional, the lion prides are strong, and with a little luck we’ll spend time with African wild dogs too.

What makes the Lower Zambezi so special for photography is the variety of ways we get to experience it. We’ll spend time on game drives, of course, but also out on the water by boat and canoe, gliding quietly along the side channels at eye level with elephants feeding on the islands, hippos surfacing beside us and fish eagles calling overhead. Few places in Africa give you that kind of low, intimate perspective. Night drives open up a whole new world of leopards on the hunt, genets, civets and hyenas, and time on foot lets us slow down and appreciate the smaller details.

This safari takes place at the start of the dry season, when the bush thins out, water becomes scarce away from the river and animals are drawn to the Zambezi’s edge. It’s a wonderful time to be on safari. The light is beautiful, the wildlife is concentrated and the river becomes the stage for some of the most memorable scenes you’ll ever photograph: elephants crossing between channels, buffalo herds on the floodplains and the bright flash of carmine bee-eaters along the banks.

If you love wild and remote places, if you love authentic safari camps, if you love the thought of photographing leopards, lions, wild dogs and elephants from a vehicle, a boat and a canoe, all in one trip, then this is the perfect safari experience for you.

Come and join us for an unforgettable photographic safari in real, authentic Africa!

Itinerary

Arrival day, from Lusaka to Lower Zambezi

The safari kicks off from Lusaka Airport, Zambia. Please connect with us to arrange any travel/accommodation prior to this point.

The group will meet up at Lusaka and we will all board onto a small private charter flight out to Jeki Airport in Lower Zambezi National Park. We will transfer to our new home for the next 6 nights - Dulini Anabezi.

Once at camp, we will all settle in and soon after that sit down for lunch. There will be time for a short siesta after, before leaving for our first safari shortly after 3pm in the afternoon. Back at camp, we will enjoy a fireside conversation about the day gone by, followed by a lovely dining experience.

DAY 1

Dulini Anabezi, Lower Zambezi

Game drive starts early in Lower Zambezi. We’ll head out 30 minutes before sunrise, at first light. Lower Zambezi is well known for incredible sightings of lions and leopards and our first focus for the mornings will be exactly that – locate the big cats and enjoy quality time with them while they are most active. Once the big cats settle down we’ll spend time closer to water sources such as lagoons and the Zambezi River. This is where animals like elephants, giraffes and buffalo congregate to drink water before the heat of the day sets in.

We’ll get back to camp by 10 or 11 in the morning, and then will enjoy a delicious breakfast. There’ll be time to relax a little in camp. The camp is right on the banks of the Zambezi River. You’ll do well to enjoy a break with binoculars in hand, waiting for birds and wildlife to come into sight right from the porch of your room or head to the viewing deck with a plunge pool overlooking the Zambezi.

By 15:30 we’ll head back out on afternoon game drive. If we found predators in the morning we’ll likely follow up on the last position. This gives us a great opportunity to spend time with them during their most active period, around sunset. We’ll enjoy an evening game drive and return to camo before 20:00. We’ll share a fireside conversation after which we will enjoy dinner together.

DAY 2-6

Departure Day - back to Lusaka

Today will be our last day in the wilds of Zambia.

We’ll have a better idea of flight time a little closer to the day, but you’ll enjoy some more quality safari time on this final day. The airport is only 45 minutes from our camp, a convenient drive. Our private charter flight from Jeki Airport will take us to Lusaka. Once we are there, the safari experience will draw to a close and you’ll begin your journey home.

DAY 7
